History of the Palais-Hotel Erzherzog Johann

In the heyday of the Baroque era, it was transformed into a magnificent palace with spacious and stylish chambers and other grand rooms. Consequently, remnants from that time can still be found in today’s hotel. It is located in the heart of Graz’s Old Town, in close proximity to the main square, allowing easy access to the city’s main attractions on foot.

In the 18th century, a palace soon emerged with sumptuously furnished rooms, suites, and banquet halls. During this time, the magnificent wrought ironwork for the courtyard railings was also created, which can still be seen in its original form to this day. In 1852, Ferdinand Sonnhammer leased the palace, and in 1877, he purchased it and gradually transformed it into an elegant hotel. The distinguished building owes its name to Archduke Johann of Habsburg and Styria.

The house quickly established itself as a meeting place for members of the aristocracy and artists, a legacy that is still evident today. Therefore, history is never far away within the walls of the palace. This atmosphere is also felt in the rooms of the former Baroque palace. You will be treated to culinary delights in the renowned Ernst Fuchs Bar.

Food & Drink

The Café Archduke Johann in the baroque covered courtyard of the house with its lush vegetation undoubtedly forms the culinary and spatial centerpiece of the house. The “Ernst Fuchs Bar,” designed according to the artist Prof. Ernst Fuchs’ designs, invites you to let the day fade away as long as possible after a day of hard work.
